Procedure of the operation | Operation on the wisdom tooth

Procedure of the operation

After a careful diagnosis and education of the patient about the upcoming operation, the anaesthesia and pain elimination of the area to be operated on is performed first. This can be done by local anesthesia by means of injections or by a special anesthetic procedure. If the wisdom tooth has grown completely out of the jaw and does not have any complicated shapes, it can be removed relatively easily with the help of forceps and levers.

Sewing is not necessary. In the case of wisdom teeth that sit with difficulty, the gum is cut open with a scalpel and folded to the side. The tissue covering the jawbone is now pushed to the side.

Using a surgical drill, an opening is drilled into the jaw, under which the tooth is located. This is done under constant cooling with a sterile saline solution. Once the tooth is exposed, it is usually divided into several small individual pieces by drills.

This makes it easier and gentler to remove the tooth from the jawbone. After removal, the gum is moved back and closed with sutures. A so-called blood cake (blood coagulum) forms in the area of the now missing tooth.

This blood cake is a gelatinous product of blood coagulation and consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, blood platelets and fibrin. It is the source of wound healing. On the first and third day after the operation a follow-up check is carried out. After about 7 – 10 days the wound healing is usually complete and the stitches can be removed. At the end of the procedure, the patient is given a wrapped cold compress to reduce swelling, as well as painkillers for the pain. If general anesthesia was chosen as the form of anesthesia, the patient should remain in the practice for at least 30 minutes to observe the circulation.

How long does the operation take?

The duration of a wisdom tooth operation varies depending on the number of teeth to be removed as well as their position, size and shape. An uncomplicated wisdom tooth sitting in the jaw can be removed in a relatively short time (about 30 – 45 minutes). If several teeth that are difficult to fit are to be extracted within one treatment session, the duration of the operation can be several hours. Therefore, before the operation you should carefully consider whether all four wisdom teeth should be removed in a single treatment session or whether two wisdom teeth should be removed in two separate sessions.
