Statistics | Plastic surgery – What is cosmetic surgery?

Statistics

In 2010, about 117,000 cosmetic surgery procedures were carried out in Germany, not including wrinkle treatments such as Botox. Laser surgery and eyelid correction are currently the most frequently used methods of cosmetic surgery. In addition, liposuction is often performed on women, while many men have their noses corrected.

Costs

The costs of cosmetic surgery are usually not covered by health insurance and must therefore be paid by the patient. They range from a few hundred euros for wrinkle treatment to several thousand euros for breast surgery, for example. The exact costs of a treatment are always discussed in advance with the cosmetic surgeon and can vary greatly.

Risks

Every operation offers risks. Besides the specific risks of each method, there are also general risks that apply to all cosmetic surgery procedures, such as :

  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Wound healing disorder
  • Rejection of a used implant
  • Allergic reaction to the material or medicine used
  • Risk due to anesthesia

Eyelid correction (eyelid lift, blepharoplasty)

This method is used especially for drooping eyelids. To tighten the eye area on the upper or lower eyelid, excess tissue is removed. Fine seams close the remaining tissue. A rare but serious complication is the injury of the eyelid lifting muscle, which can lead to dry eyes.

Ear correction (earplasty, earmould)

This means the reduction of the size of the auricle or the creation of protruding ears by changing the shape of the cartilage of the auricle. For this purpose, the skin is partially detached from the auricle in order to thin out or incise the cartilage. This involves altering the external shape of the nose by enlarging, reducing or changing the shape of the bridge of the nose, the turbinates or the entrance to the nose. In addition to nose correction as part of cosmetic surgery, this procedure may also be necessary to improve nasal breathing or in cases of facial malformations.

The cartilaginous and bony nasal skeleton, and in some cases the nasal septum, are corrected. It can take up to a year until the final healing process is complete, although small changes in shape may still occur during this time. More on the topic of rhinoplasty.
