Summary

Electrotherapy includes various forms of therapeutic current application to treat pain and muscle breakdown. The different forms of electrotherapy have different effects on the body, can be applied to the body directly or through water and have different penetration depths. Thus, electrotherapy covers a broad spectrum of physiotherapy and is an integral part of therapy for some diseases.

Nevertheless, there are methods, such as high-frequency therapy, whose effectiveness is still disputed today and whose payment is not covered by health insurance. The effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), on the other hand, has been proven by studies and is therefore widely used in pain therapy. In general, however, each form of electrotherapy is perceived by patients as differently effective and pleasant and for this reason each patient should decide individually on the effectiveness of each method.
