Summary
Pulmonary alveoli make up the smallest unit of the lung. They are formed by various cells and are responsible for the gas exchange between the air we breathe and the circulating blood. This requires both functional alveoli and a blood-air barrier that is as thin as possible, as well as an adequate supply of blood (perfusion) and oxygen (ventilation).
