The duration
It is difficult to say how long the numbness lasts on the lip. It depends on its cause. In general, however, it can be said that the numbness is usually temporary and short-lived.
A permanent numbness of the lip occurs when the skin nerve is completely severed. This can be the case after dental or oral surgery. However, other skin nerves gradually take over the sensitive care in this area.
As a result, the “numb” area at least becomes smaller. Even in the case of a stroke, a numbness of the lip can persist permanently if the patient is not treated quickly and adequately. In this case, the symptoms do not recede.
The prognosis
The prognosis for numbness in the lip is usually good. In many cases, healing occurs. The unpleasant sensation disappears again without treatment.
If more serious diseases are the cause of lip numbness, it is important to diagnose it quickly and treat it promptly. This is also very important for the prognosis of a stroke, for example. The same applies to inflammations in the paranasal sinuses and in the dental area.
