Therapy for back bruises

A back bruise after a fall can lead to extensive bruising and severe pain. The extent can be influenced by the right treatment directly after the fall. As with other bruises, the well-known PECH rule should be followed first.

This means: The athletic activity and any further strain should be paused immediately (break). The affected area should now be cooled with a coolant (ice). This will first reduce the blood circulation, which means that less fluid will leak into the tissue and the swelling and bruising will be less severe.

A compression bandage over the breast or abdomen can also be considered here. It should not be pulled too tight and an anti-inflammatory, additionally cooling ointment should be applied (compression). If possible, the patient should be positioned with the upper part of the body up (high position). The patient should take a sufficiently long break from any kind of stress and should spare his back.

Often the pain makes lying on the back impossible, he should sleep on his stomach or side or be sufficiently padded with pillows. If necessary, pain-relieving medication such as ibuprofen or diclofenac can be taken. In the later course, after about 48 hours, heat and the accompanying increased blood circulation can accelerate the healing process.

Massages are not recommended at first. Kinesio Tapes, which are applied with a special technique, can support the healing process. Immediately after the fall and in the acute phase, the application of heat is not recommended in the case of bruises.

This increases the blood circulation in the tissue and increases the amount of fluid coming out of the injured vessels. The swelling leads to severe pain and bruising. Following the PECH rule, cooling measures should therefore be taken within the first two days. Warming ointments or heating agents can then support the healing process as it progresses. The increased blood circulation now leads to an acceleration of the healing process.
