Therapy | Pain in the wisdom tooth

Therapy

Wisdom tooth inflammation usually causes patients great pain, which makes it impossible to sleep at night. They can radiate over the whole jaw up to the ear. Painkillers are often used to relieve the pain.

Ibuprofen should be the drug of choice in this case. Paracetamol can be used as an alternative. One should not take medication containing the substance acetylsalicylic acid, as in aspirin, as this inhibits blood clotting. If wisdom teeth are removed, the doctor must be informed in any case about the intake, as strong bleeding can occur during and also after the operation.

However, the painkillers only relieve the symptoms temporarily, should not be taken for a long period of time and a visit to the dentist is recommended in case of longer lasting pain, as the problem has to be treated. Adequate oral hygiene should also be ensured during the painful period. As an alternative to the painkillers, you can get lozenges from the pharmacy, which have a mild anaesthetic effect.

There are also remedies that can be applied directly to the painful area and thus provide relief. Besides good oral hygiene, cooling is the most important household remedy against pain. The cold causes blood vessels to contract and the inflammatory effect is slowed down.

This also relieves pain. Holding a cool pack against the cheek from the outside makes the pain a little more bearable and is also a good choice when fighting swelling. Heat, on the other hand, should be avoided, as this allows bacteria to multiply much better.

Cooling should always be applied alternately with a cooling break of the same length. Flushing with a salt water solution is also very popular. Sea salt dissolved in warm water is left in the mouth for 30 seconds and gargled with it.

Afterwards spit out the water and do not swallow it. This also inhibits the inflammation. The therapy with cloves has a long tradition.

You can bite them as close as possible to the affected area. In addition, relief should be achieved by placing savoy cabbage leaves in a compress and pressing it from the outside against the painful area. If you have chamomile or sage at hand, a tea brewed with it can also achieve small successes in pain relief, which are also tolerable in taste.

The onion has a similar effect. In addition to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects, it can also fight bacteria. It is advisable to chew a slice of raw onion in order for the effect to unfold.

But also crushed and wrapped in a cloth, it develops its healing power when pressed against the cheek. Among many other medicines, tea tree oil should be mentioned last. It works similar to cloves and should be used diluted with water as a mouth rinse.

As homeopathic remedies against toothache, Schüssler salts and various globules are offered. Among the salts, Silicea D12 is said to be the most effective against toothache. Pain radiating into the ears can be combated by taking the tablets at a certain interval.

Among the globules, Arnica helps well against swollen cheeks, Belladonna against suddenly appearing, throbbing or knocking pain in the gums. These remedies can be tried for a few days at the beginning of the pain. If the symptoms and the pain do not decrease, a visit to the dentist is highly recommended.
