What does the tooth removal under general anesthesia cost?

For the extraction of wisdom teeth under general anesthesia, additional costs are incurred. The dentist receives a fixed amount for the extraction from the health insurance company. The treatment around it, namely general anesthesia, must be financed additionally.

The anesthesiologist must be there the whole time, all anesthesia instruments must be available. Therefore, the cost of surgery under general anesthesia varies depending on the duration of treatment. As an indication, one hour of surgery costs about 200-300 €. The price does not increase that much with longer treatment.

For each additional hour, about 50-70 € are charged. Every dentist charges a different price, so you should not stick to these figures, but only orientate yourself on them. In the doctor’s consultation a certain approximation can take place, because the dentist knows how long the operation will take approximately.

As a rule, the statutory health insurance does not pay for general anesthesia. The actual treatment, removing the wisdom tooth, is of course paid for by the health insurance companies. The private health insurance companies often pay at least partially for the treatment under general anesthesia.

Whether this is the case, you have to ask your private insurance company. In special exceptional cases, it can happen that the anaesthesia is completely covered by the public health insurance. Such cases must be justified as medically necessary.

The terms and conditions of the respective health insurance company are binding. We recommend that you contact the health insurance company directly if you have any questions or are unclear.

  • In the case of children or people with physical or mental disabilities, the anesthesia is reimbursed if the patients cannot participate in the treatment while awake.
  • In some cases, patients with strong fears of dental treatment can present a psychological certificate proving that a dental phobia that has already been treated psychotherapeutically exists. In these cases, the health insurance company should cover the costs of general anesthesia, since treatment would probably not be possible while awake.
  • In a few cases, patients may have an allergy to the local anesthesia. If no suitable local anesthesia can be used, general anesthesia must be paid for by the health insurance company.
