When do the stomach cramps occur?

If stomach cramps occur after eating, there are two main causes. One is food intolerance. Secondly, spoiled food may have caused food poisoning.

Food intolerance means that the body cannot digest certain substances. This can lead to cramps and pain. Often responsible for stomach cramps after eating are fructose intolerance and lactose intolerance.

After the consumption of dairy products, intestinal and stomach cramps occur. This is accompanied by flatulence and possibly diarrhoea. Abstaining from these foods helps.

If complaints occur directly after eating, spoiled food can also be the cause. Expired meat or fish products in particular can cause severe stomach cramps with accompanying nausea. In addition, stomach cramps after eating can be caused by an inflammation of the mucous membrane in the stomach or a stomach ulcer.

Here heartburn and a sharp pain are accompanying symptoms. In case of doubt, these symptoms should be excluded by a doctor. Stomach cramps are often an expression of an illness.

In many cases, however, they also occur during pregnancy and are usually harmless. Almost every woman suffers from stomach cramps during pregnancy, especially at the beginning and end. First of all, the hormonal changes during pregnancy cause stomach cramps, which are sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting.Sometimes stomach cramps are the first sign of pregnancy.

There are usually remedies for nausea such as Vomex® and bed rest. As the pregnancy progresses, problems with the gastrointestinal tract arise mainly due to the growth of the child in the abdomen. In late weeks of pregnancy, the unborn child presses on the organs.

This sometimes leads to stomach cramps. Here it helps to change the situation. The baby presses on the stomach, especially when lying down.

In addition to these causes, stomach cramps during pregnancy, as in non-pregnant women, can also be caused by viruses or other diseases. If further symptoms occur or the stomach cramps persist for a long time, a doctor should be consulted. The problem is that gynaecological problems associated with pregnancy may also cause the stomach cramps. In general, however, stomach cramps during pregnancy are harmless.
