Stomach cramps often occur together with diarrhea. If stomach cramps and diarrhoea are the main complaints, there are several possible causes. In the majority of cases it is the classic viral gastro-enteritis.

Various viruses such as adeno- or corona viruses cause unspecific symptoms such as stomach cramps and diarrhoea, which do not require special therapy. Bed rest, salty food, plenty to drink and possibly stomach soothing tea will help. Loperamide (Imodium®) can also be used to treat diarrhea.

Particularly severe stomach cramps with severe diarrhea and vomiting are caused by rota and noroviruses. In such cases, in-patient treatment may be necessary to prevent further infection and dehydration. Old people are particularly at risk.

Food poisoning or food intolerance can also cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea. If an infection has recently been treated with antibiotics, it may be an antibiotic-induced diarrhoea with stomach cramps. Rarely, a chronic disease like Crohn’s disease may be behind it.

A doctor should be consulted if the symptoms persist for a longer period of time. Stomach cramps and nausea often occur together. There can be a wide variety of the above-mentioned causes.

Viral infections in particular lead to nausea, which accompanies the stomach cramps. This leads to torrential vomiting that lasts for hours. In some cases, the person affected cannot hold a sip of water in their body.

Food can also be responsible for stomach cramps and nausea. In this case, discomfort occurs especially after eating. Through stomach cramps and nausea, the body tries to remove the toxic ingredients.

Thus, vomiting often occurs after eating spoiled food. The symptoms should disappear after a few days at the latest. Inflammations of the stomach lining are also possible causes of stomach cramps and nausea.

The diagnosis is made here by means of a gastroscopy. Particularly in women of childbearing age, the possibility of pregnancy must always be considered in the event of stomach cramps and nausea. Here, such complaints occur especially at the beginning of the pregnancy.

The drug Vomex® can help against nausea, which effectively combats vomiting and nausea. Stomach cramps and flatulence are usually caused by a digestive problem. Inflammation in the stomach itself rarely causes stomach cramps and flatulence.

Lactose and fructose intolerance typically cause flatulence. Stomach cramps and flatulence can also occur as a result of continuous poor nutrition. Only in rare cases is flatulence, which occurs in addition to stomach cramps, in need of treatment.
