Alternatives to Chlorhexamed® forte

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Chlorhexamed®, we strongly advise against its use. Are there alternatives with the same effect? There are mouth rinses available from pharmacies and drugstores, many of which are purely plant-based. However, no mouth rinse solution achieves similarly good bactericidal effects within the oral cavity as Chlorhexamed®. This is mainly due to the structure of the molecule chlorhexidine digluconate, as it can adhere to the oral cavity for a very long time, whereas the active ingredients from other solutions are quickly washed out again after the rinsing process.

Use during pregnancy and lactation?

When Chlorhexamed® forte is used as intended, the active ingredient is not absorbed to any significant extent. Even if swallowed accidentally, the drug is excreted 100% and does not reach the child. Application during pregnancy and while breastfeeding is therefore unproblematic.

Does the pill influence the effect of Chlorhexamed® forte?

The active substance does not influence hormonal contraception in any way and the application is safe from this point of view, as the active substances within the contraceptive and within the chlorhexidine preparations do not interact with each other.

Is Chlorhexamed® forte alcohol-free?

All GSK products containing chlorhexidine digluconate are alcohol-free since 2011. Studies have shown that the alcohol content in rinsing solutions does not have any accelerating or supporting effect and is therefore no longer present in Chlorhexamed® preparations. Therefore, there is no danger for patients suffering from alcohol addiction or who could relapse through consumption, as alcohol can even be absorbed into the bloodstream via the oral mucosa.

For this reason Chlorhexamed® products are safe to use for children over 12 years of age. Nevertheless, the dentist should be consulted, as there are also products from other companies that contain alcohol. Please pay attention to the exact package insert.

Is Chlorhexamed® forte available without a prescription?

Both Chlorhexamed® rinsing solutions ,as well as gels or fluids for application, are available in pharmacies without prescription. The individually suitable preparation for the respective complaint should be discussed with the dentist and the prescribed dosage should not be exceeded.

Is discoloration of teeth possible with Chlorhexamed® forte?

The use of Chlorhexamed® rinsing solutions and gel preparations can cause discoloration of teeth after a few days. Since the chlorhexidine molecule can adhere well to the tooth due to its property of a negative charge, discolouration is a possible consequence of the inherent colour of the preparation. However, this phenomenon is only reversible and temporary, as after discontinuation of the application the molecules lose their holding power and the teeth completely restore their old colour. On personal request, a professional tooth cleaning can be provided, in which all discolorations are systematically cleaned.
