Associated symptoms
In some cases, pain in the feet may be accompanied by accompanying symptoms. Inflammatory processes such as a gout attack or rheumatic disease are usually accompanied by reddening and overheating of the affected regions. Other accompanying symptoms are possible.
In the case of gout, a hardening of the joint may be palpable. Strongly stressed feet often show a swelling of the foot in addition. Depending on the cause, this is mainly seen either in the evening after a long day or in the morning after getting up.
In some cases of pain in the feet, the triggering malposition can be clearly seen. This is the case, for example, with hallux valgus or with flat and hollow feet. In diabetic feet, pain is a late symptom.
In most cases, damage to the skin and nerves can be observed as accompanying symptoms. Open sores that may be inflamed, and tingling or numbness are not uncommon with pain in the feet as a result of diabetes. These sensations also occur in the case of a slipped disc.
Further accompanying symptoms of incorrect footwear are distinct pressure points on the back and sides of the foot. However, pain in the feet is often accompanied by no other accompanying symptoms. The phenomenon of swollen feet is often associated with pain in the feet.
Swollen feet usually occur when one has had to stand and walk a lot during the day. Gravity causes water to gradually accumulate in the feet. This causes pain in the feet, especially in the evening.
You can prevent this by putting your feet up in between. Another cause of swollen feet is the side effect of certain drugs for high blood pressure. These so-called calcium antagonists can in rare cases cause the feet to become swollen.
However, this is usually accompanied by no pain in the feet. If the feet are swollen in the morning, there is another mechanism behind it. In some cases, there is pain in the feet and also leg pain.
If these two symptoms occur in parallel, it should not be long before going to the doctor. Pain in the feet and also leg pain can indicate a blood clot in the blood vessels of the legs (thrombosis in the leg). Here, swelling and a feeling of tension in the leg also occur.
If there is pain in the foot and leg pain while walking, an undersupply of blood may be the cause. In many cases of pain in the feet and also leg pain, however, these are harmless causes. For example, pain due to overstrain can present itself in the foot and leg.
In the case of longer or severe pain, however, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Some people complain of swelling and pain in the feet, especially in the morning after getting up. In this case, overstraining or a defective position is less responsible.
Rather, this is a sign of a weak pumping action of the heart (heart failure). This is particularly problematic when lying down, because more blood is in front of the heart due to body position and gravity. This is also the case at night when sleeping.A weak heart can eventually no longer pump this blood sufficiently through the circulation.
It then accumulates in the veins. This also happens in the feet, causing swelling and pain in the feet. You can see this most clearly in the morning after getting up.
In the course of the day, the symptoms initially improve. In the evening, however, swelling can reappear due to the subsidence of blood. Swollen feet in the morning are negligible if they occur only once.
However, if you notice swelling and pain in your feet over a longer period of time in the morning after getting up, a doctor should be consulted. He can look for the cause and accurately assess the heart performance. If you have swollen feet after getting up, you should also pay attention to other symptoms of heart failure.
These can be, for example, reduced performance, tiredness and problems with breathing. Older people are particularly affected by heart failure. In addition, people with a previous history of heart disease are at high risk of a weak heart.
If pain in the feet occurs, especially at night, the “restless legs syndrome” can be the cause. It is a neurological disorder that typically causes pain in the feet and legs at night. In addition, there are also sensations of discomfort and the desire to move.
The cause is an imbalance of messenger substances in the brain. This is also the starting point for the drugs used. Other causes of pain in the feet, especially at night, are overexertion during the day.
Often, pain in the feet is only really noticed when one comes to rest. In some cases, pain in the feet is only noticed when walking or running. There is pain with almost every step.
Depending on the cause, this can occur on the sole of the foot, the heel or laterally. The most common reason for pain only when walking or walking is also here a permanent overload of the feet. This usually occurs in connection with overweight and unhealthy footwear.
The pain occurs here after prolonged strain. If pain occurs after only a few meters, another cause must be responsible for the pain in the feet. Here it is worthwhile to inspect the feet from all sides.
Possibly, there are already defects that can be the cause of the pain. If the pain is only felt when walking or running, some causes become unlikely. For example, a herniated disc will cause pain and tingling even at rest.
Inflammatory processes are also not only noticeable when they occur. However, they would be felt more strongly here. Therapeutically, the first thing to consider is a rest and protection of the feet.
Pain in the feet is a signal from the body that something is wrong here. This should be taken seriously. Often the complaints are better after a break. However, if pain in the feet occurs over a certain period of time only when walking and running, a clarification is useful.
