Contraindications

Spiriva® should not be taken if you are allergic to the active ingredient tiotropium or to lactose (milk sugar). As there is insufficient knowledge about the side effects in pregnancy, Spiriva® should only be used under a clear and necessary indication. During breastfeeding, Spiriva® should rather be avoided, as it is not sufficiently known whether it can also be found in breast milk when taken.

Side effects

As a side effect of the parasympatholytic Spiriva® , so-called anticholinergic effects can occur. Anticholinergic means an inhibition of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, which is responsible for the transmission of parasympathetic functions in the organism. In simple terms, the parasympathetic nervous system is the part of the nervous system responsible for the rest, relaxation and digestion phases of the body.

A dry mouth is a common side effect of taking Spiriva®. Occasionally, constipation, coughing, dizziness or even headaches may occur. Insomnia can also occur while taking Spiriva®.

Occasionally a stomach acid reflux may also occur. Blurred vision or difficulty urinating may also occur. Rare side effects include palpitations or increased intraocular pressure. Finally, nausea, inflammation of the throat or gums may also occur.

Interactions

Spiriva® should not be taken together with other so-called anticholinergics that have the same effect. This can lead to an intensification of the effect. No side effects have been observed in combination with other drugs used to treat COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
