Contrast medium for MRI of the breast

If necessary, the MRI of the breast is made with a contrast medium. This means that a fluid that is particularly visible in the image, such as gadolinium, is introduced into the patient’s bloodstream via a venous access. Regions with a good blood supply, which may also include a tumor, e.g. breast cancer, can thus be particularly well visualized. The administration of contrast medium rarely has side effects, but it may not be necessary in patients with limited kidney function.

Results

If a tumor, i.e. a mass in itself, is actually detected in the image, this does not indicate a malignant finding (e.g. breast cancer) from the outset. Only a tissue sample (biopsy) and a subsequent histological examination of the fine tissue (histology) can decide on this, the results of which are decisive for the further procedure.

Costs of an MRT examination of the breast

Unfortunately, the costs for an MRI of the breast are rarely covered by the statutory health insurance companies. Patients with a hereditary load, i.e. mutation in the BRCA-1 gene (breast cancer gene), will only be reimbursed within the framework of a study of the German Cancer Aid. For self-pay patients, an MRI of the breast costs about 300 – 400 Euros.

However, considering the advantages for diagnostics (especially before surgery), this investment could be worthwhile. The costs are higher for privately insured patients. The costs vary depending on the complexity of the examination, three-dimensional reconstruction of the images or the administration of contrast medium. Costs between 400 – 700 € must be expected.
