Distance
The treatment of an ovarian cyst depends on the location, type and size of the cyst. Most patients do not need any treatment at all, even if they have an ovarian cyst. Some cysts, such as the corpus luteum cyst, can recede spontaneously and without treatment and should therefore not be treated.
Nevertheless, a patient can take so-called spasmolytics as a symptomatic treatment. These are drugs that the patient can take for abdominal pain and which help to minimize the abdominal cramps caused by the cyst. In rare cases, such as severe pain or rupture, the cyst should be removed from the ovary.
For gynecologists, removing a cyst from the ovary is a routine procedure that the patient should not be afraid of. In most cases, the cyst is removed in a small operation using a so-called minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, and the patient can often leave the clinic after one or two days. However, a patient only needs to have a cyst removed from her ovary if it causes her problems or pain.
Prophylaxis
If a patient suffers from recurring cysts, the pill can help the patient not to develop cysts. Since the pill inhibits ovulation (ovulation inhibitor), it can often stop cysts from growing.
Is a cyst on the ovary dangerous?
A cyst on the ovary is usually not dangerous. It is usually a small cyst, which often recedes of its own accord after a short time without being noticed. Nevertheless, it can also happen that a cyst on the ovary becomes dangerous.
This is the case, for example, if the cyst bursts at the ovary and the fluid from the cyst passes into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis. This is known as peritonitis, which then leads to very severe pain that sets in quite quickly and suddenly. In this case it is essential to see a doctor as soon as possible to prevent the inflammation from spreading.
In addition, a cyst on the ovary can become dangerous when the cyst is twisted (pedunculated ovarian cyst), when it causes the blood vessels to become constricted and can no longer supply the ovaries with blood and therefore nutrients. In this case too, the patient reports sudden pain, but it is so severe that the patient finds it difficult to walk. Since the lack of blood supply can cause the patient’s ovary to die (necrotize), it is very important to drive to the hospital or call the emergency doctor as soon as possible so that the patient can be operated on as soon as possible.A rotation of the cyst on the ovary is so dangerous because the death of the ovary can lead to the patient losing one of her ovaries in the worst case, and thus only being able to have children to a lesser extent or not at all. However, apart from these possible scenarios where a cyst on the ovary can become dangerous, it is generally rare for a cyst on the ovary to become dangerous or lead to major complications.
