Duration | Glucose tolerance test during pregnancy

Duration

The costs for the glucose tolerance test are about 20 Euro. However, the costs are covered by the health insurance company in the context of preventive medical checkups for pregnant women.

Does the health insurance pay for it?

The costs of the glucose tolerance test during pregnancy have been covered by health insurance companies since 2012 as part of the preventive medical checkups for pregnant women. If the value is increased, the costs for the 75g-oGTT are also covered. However, if 75g-oGTT is performed without the 50g-oGTT pre-test, as sometimes recommended by doctors, the health insurance does not pay for this test.

What are the alternatives?

In the case of risk factors for gestational diabetes, such as diabetes in relatives or gestational diabetes in previous pregnancies, a measurement of fasting blood glucose can be performed before the 24th week of pregnancy. There is no alternative examination to detect gestational diabetes.
