Eye drops
Floxal is available in different dosage forms. Eye drops are the most commonly prescribed. There are two different variants of these: a bottle containing a certain milliliter quantity of eye drops that is used repeatedly and the so-called EDO eye drops.
EDO stands for Ein Dosis Ophtiole. These are several very small bottles for single use which contain only a very small amount of ophtiole, enough for a few drops. The advantage of EDO eye drops is that their use is more hygienically safe. Especially in the case of a bacterial or viral inflammation, there is a disadvantage of the bottle for multiple use, that it can come into direct contact with the infected eye and is therefore contaminated itself, i.e. bacteria have been transferred to the bottle. The EDO variant is therefore preferable, but it is also more expensive.
Floxal eye ointment
Floxal is not only available in the form of eye drops but also as eye ointment. The active ingredient is the same: The antibiotic Ofloxacin. Both the ointment and the eye drops therefore have the same effect.
Whether the eye ointment or the eye drops are used depends on what the doctor prescribes and what the patient prefers. The ointment should also be used several times a day. Especially before going to bed the ointment can be advantageous, because when the eyes are closed, it covers the eye longer than a film. If both drops and the ointment are used, there should be a period of at least 15 minutes between the two applications. In addition, the ointment should always be applied after the drops, as otherwise the drops can rinse the ointment out of the eye and thus reduce the effect.
Is Foxal available over the counter?
No. Floxal is a drug that contains an antibiotic as its active ingredient.Even though these are not tablets but eye drops for local application, the drug is only available on prescription and can therefore only be purchased after presenting a prescription at the pharmacy.
