Forecast | Healing of a torn ligament

Forecast

With early and consistent therapy, a torn ligament usually heals without consequences and has a good prognosis. Consequential damage usually only remains if a torn ligament has not been detected and thus not adequately treated. For example, arthrosis, i.e. irreversible damage to the joint cartilage, can then occur, which can severely restrict the quality of life.

A permanent, i.e. chronic instability of the affected joint may also persist. Torn ligaments can be prevented by exercising the muscles well, so that they take the strain off the ligaments and, in the event of trauma, the ligaments are less likely to be seriously injured. Coordination exercises also help to train balance and thus prevent possible trauma from falls. If a patient has already had a torn ligament, special bandages that can be worn during sports provide additional joint stabilization and thus relieve the ligaments.
