Gel | Chlorhexidine

Gel

Chlorhexidine is also a 1% component in dental gels. Such a gel is used in cases of bacterial gum inflammation, periodontitis, high caries risk and people with limited oral hygiene ability. After a completed operation, oral hygiene is often difficult, so that such a gel can provide relief.

Also, some people do not like rinsing with a mouthwash, so a gel is an alternative. These gels are a medicine and can only be bought in pharmacies. The duration of use should be limited, as it can lead to taste sensation disorders and brownish discolouration in the mouth.

The method of application may vary. Either you apply it to the affected areas with a cotton swab after brushing your teeth and let it take effect. It can also be used like a normal toothpaste. Furthermore, there is also the option of putting it into a custom-made tooth splint and placing it on the teeth. It is not diluted with saliva, so that an intensive treatment of teeth and gums is possible.

Powder

Chlorhexidine can also be a component of a powder whose field of application is similar to that of the gel. As mentioned above, it also has a supportive effect in this form in the treatment of inflammation of the oral mucosa due to a bacterial infection. It is also used postoperatively and in cases of aggravated oral hygiene.

In addition, it is also used as a powder form or as a cream for the navel care of newborns. It can also be used to treat infected wounds. Inflammations on the female breast or those that have developed in the pubic area due to friction are also treated with an ointment, cream or powder containing chlorhexidine.

But also skin areas at risk of infection such as the armpit and skin folds caused by overweight can be treated with it. The affected skin areas should be applied with the powder several times a day. As side effects when applied to the skin, it can possibly burn or trigger an allergy.

Chlorhexidine is not very compatible with soaps. Soaps are also one of the ingredients of toothpaste. Therefore, before using chlorhexidine, you should brush your teeth and rinse your mouth well with water afterwards. Also, when showering, all soap residue should be removed from the skin before use. If chlorhexidine in powder form is applied to areas of skin that are very wet, the healing of wounds due to the formation of crusts can be delayed.

Chlorhexamed® forte

Chlorhexamed® forte is an alcohol-free mouth rinse solution containing 0.2% chlorhexidine. Other ingredients are peppermint flavor, purified water and sorbitol solution, a sugar alcohol. The mouthrinse temporarily reduces the number of bacteria and can thus have a positive effect on the healing process in case of bacteria-related diseases of the oral cavity.

The formation of plaque is also reduced for the time of application. For this purpose, rinse 2x daily (morning & evening) with about 10ml solution for half a minute. Finally, the medicine is spat out, not swallowed.

In order not to reduce the effect, do not rinse with water afterwards. Do not exceed the treatment time prescribed by the dentist. Other areas of application include the limited ability to maintain oral hygiene, such as after an operation or fracture in the jaw area.

The dentist also often prescribes Chlorhexamed® forte after periodontal treatment to improve wound healing. Periodontosis or also called periodontitis describes a general inflammation of the entire periodontium. Furthermore, a Chlorhexamed® forte spray is also produced, which also contains 0.2% active ingredient. It is sprayed directly on the affected areas and spat out after the exposure time. Like the mouthrinse, the spray should be used a maximum of 2 times a day.
