Home adaptation – bathroom and shower

For many people, the bathroom is relatively small and remodeling is more difficult. First, change the door hardware and install it so that the door swings open to the outside. This frees up space and also has a safety benefit. If you fall in the bathroom and lie in front of the door, helpers will have easy access. Install fixed grab bars next to the shower, toilet and sink. They can prevent a fall if you lose your balance.

– Shower: It is ideal if the shower and bathroom floors are at the same height. The rim around the shower basin should be as low as possible. Frail people need a way to shower while sitting. Special shower chairs or folding seats attached to the wall are suitable for this purpose. Non-slip rubber mats should be placed on the smooth floor – both inside and outside the shower. If the bathroom is going to be retiled anyway, use small, non-slip tiles.

For frail people, a special bathtub lift is useful. This is an electrically operated chair that is placed in the bathtub and is height adjustable. So you can sit on the chair and automatically lower yourself into the tub for a comfortable bath. Be sure to put a non-slip mat on the bottom of the tub.

– Toilet: Often the toilet seat is too low, which makes it difficult to stand up. In this case, attachments placed on the bowl will help.

– Sink: There must be room for two people in front of the sink in case you need assistance washing. The same applies to the underside of the basin. Here should be enough space for the legs, in case you want to wash sitting down. For this case, the mirror should also be placed accordingly low.
