The following symptoms and complaints may indicate hypoparathyroidism (hypothyroidism):
Main symptom
A distinction is made between functional and psychological symptoms:
Functional symptoms
- Hypocalcemic tetany (ICD 10 E83.5) – seizures or neuromuscular hyperexcitability due to a deficiency of calcium, affecting mainly the face and extremities; tingling, paresthesias (numbness) in the forearms, hands, mouth region are often precursors of the muscle spasms/twitching.
- Fish mouth, carp mouth – due to a spasm of the facial muscles.
- Laryngospasm (spasm of the glottis).
- In 75% of cases in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.
- In 40% of cases in postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
- Obstetric position of the lower extremities
- Pointed foot position
- Spasms in the muscles of the bile ducts, stomach and intestines, and urinary bladder lead to abdominal pain (abdominal pain), diarrhea (diarrhea), increased urination
- Arrhythmias (cardiac arrhythmias) – bradycardia (too slow heartbeat: < 60 beats per minute), possibly also bradyarrhythmias (very slow heartbeat with a frequency below 50 beats per minute without a recognizable rhythm).
- Cardiogenic shock (form of shock caused by weakened pumping action of the heart).
- Difficult to treat hypotension (low blood pressure).
- Dyspnea (shortness of breath) caused by spasms of the respiratory muscles.
- Sensorineural hearing loss
- Dwarfism
- Nephropathy (kidney disease)
- Ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid).
Mental symptoms
- Anxiety
- Depressive moods
- Hallucinations
- Irritability
- Confusion
