Is it allowed to do sports despite pain?

If a knee joint arthrosis has been diagnosed and the affected person experiences pain while doing sports, the sport should be stopped. This is especially true for sports that place a high load on the knee joint, such as soccer, handball, tennis or athletics. In general, patients should always pay close attention to the type of pain that occurs during sports, so it is possible that the pain is due to tension in the muscles or surrounding tissues and is not caused by osteoarthritis. To be on the safe side, it is therefore important to first stop the sport and then have the cause of the pain clarified by a doctor.

Prognosis

The prognosis for patients with knee arthrosis can be made relatively well. Thanks to modern treatment methods, the affected patients can be well cared for, so that even a favorable prognosis for advanced arthrosis is not unthinkable. In general, however, the earlier the arthrosis is detected and treated, the better the chances of recovery. Even if conservative treatment methods are not effective and surgery becomes necessary, a good prognosis can be made thanks to the good rehabilitation measures.

Sick leave

Sick leave for knee joint arthrosis depends on the progress of the disease and the type of employment. Patients who are only in the early stages of knee arthrosis and, for example, have a job involving sedentary work often have less chance of a sick note than patients who have to perform physical labor. If the knee arthrosis has to be treated surgically, patients are usually put on sick leave for at least 1-2 weeks. The selected surgical procedure and the progress of healing are also decisive for the duration of the sick leave.
