Muscle building through strength training
Targeted strength training is probably the most effective way to build muscles. Training exercises with your own body weight as well as additional weights can be used. The decisive factor in stimulating muscle growth is to bring the muscle into a state of exhaustion.
The body reacts to this by growing muscles in order to be better prepared for the next exercise. This results in an increase in the size of individual muscle cells. Whether this also leads to an increase in the number of muscle cells within a muscle is currently still a matter of controversy in research.
Since the muscles get used to well-established movement sequences after a certain time, it is recommended to use different exercises to train individual muscles in order to give the body new growth impulses and incentives again and again. In addition, it is important to differentiate in strength training whether a muscle or muscle group is trained in isolation, i.e. no other muscles are used than those in the exercise, or whether several muscle groups are involved in the exercise by supporting the execution of the movement. It goes without saying that isolated training of one muscle group leads to a greater stimulus for growth within these muscles than a training exercise that requires several muscle groups.
This should be illustrated by two exercises: For example, during a knee bend, not only the muscles of the large leg extensor at the front of the thigh are used, but also the gluteal muscles and, to a lesser extent, the lower leg muscles. With the help of a leg extension machine, however, it is possible to train the large leg extension on the front of the thigh in isolation, since the gluteal muscles are relieved by the sitting position.
