A “back school” is the learning of exercises to build up muscles in the area of the back. In addition, one is informed about the structure and function of the back. In this therapy for back pain, special attention is paid to the various load situations in order to achieve a conscious correction of the patient’s posture.

In this way one learns techniques to relieve the spinal column, among other things in extreme situations in which the patient has to carry heavy loads. For example, you will learn how heavy loads (water boxes) are lifted from the floor, etc. Scientific studies have proven that the best results (behavioral changes) are achieved when a so-called intensive program of three to five weeks duration is followed.

There are different training programs, which are also offered by health insurance companies. Usually these programs are suitable for patients with rather chronic back pain, i.e. for patients who suffer from back pain over a longer period of time (approx. 6 weeks).

Within the framework of physiotherapy (movement therapy, physiotherapy), similar to back school, an attempt is made to reduce the wrong movement patterns. Exercises are performed to reduce the damage to the musculoskeletal system. The most important thing here is that the patient learns various forms of exercise for therapy, which he can then continue to do on his own at home.

It is a utopia to believe that back pain will disappear permanently by means of one-time physiotherapy. Here again, the patient’s own initiative is required. The exercises of the physiotherapy include stretching, tensing, relaxing, …In addition, as in back school, everyday movements should also be practiced anew in order to achieve a daily relief of the back.
