Ovarian Insufficiency: Therapy

General measures

  • Bed rest and physical rest: although it is not proven that physical rest and bed rest lead to reduction of placental insufficiency and better care of the baby, it is a reasonable measure according to general clinical experience. Note: According to a meta-analysis, pregnant women who sleep on their backs in the third trimester (third trimester) have a 2.63-fold risk of stillbirth. Therefore, heavily pregnant women should try to sleep in the lateral position. According to this study, it makes no difference whether they lie on the left or right side. All other therapeutic approaches to improve the supply of the child, such as oxygen application, hyperalimentation with glucose or amino acids, hemodilution (targeted blood thinning), “low-dose aspirin administration“, abdominal decompression, etc., have led to no improvement in the situation, but occasionally to negative results. Only the elimination of noxious agents and intensified prenatal care are effective. Since the spectrum of damage to the child can range from delayed growth, to severe neurological and physical developmental disorders, to intrauterine or perinatal amniotic death, it is particularly important to determine the most optimal time of delivery. This is especially true in the case of early decompensation of intrauterine deficiency in view of the expected immaturity of the child and potential organ damage.
  • Nicotine cessation (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Alcohol waiver
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Stress

Regular checkups

  • Intensified prenatal care

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet, taking into account the disease that may be present. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.

Sports Medicine

  • Extensive cessation of athletic activities – pregnant women who exercise more than seven hours per week have a three-and-a-half times higher risk of losing their baby than women who avoid physical exertion; the following sports are most dangerous: jogging, ball sports, or tennis; swimming is safe.
  • If necessary, create a fitness or training plan with suitable sports disciplines based on a medical check (health check or athlete check).
