PC workstation analysis and ergonomization

Keeping our body healthy is a high priority in our daily life. We try to get enough exercise in our free time, pay attention to healthy nutrition, go to preventive medical checkups and furnish our apartments in a back-friendly way. We spend a large part of our available time, usually 8 hours a day, at our workplace.

Unfortunately, the conditions there are not always conducive to good health in many respects despite the increased attention paid by employers. The number of PC workstations has risen steadily in recent years and with this increase there has also been a rise in screen-related complaints, although increasing attention is being paid to workplace ergonomics. There are several reasons for the increase in screen-related complaints, which need to be analyzed more closely.

A lack of workplace ergonomics provides a good breeding ground for complaints. The resulting complaints are individually very diverse and occur individually or (often) in combination. RSI (repetitive strain injury syndrome) means injury and pain in the cervical spine, shoulder, arm and hand area due to repetitive strain or known as CANS (complaints of arms, neck and shoulder)

  • Too little movement and constant sitting in a monotonous working position damages our muscles and spine
  • Recurring work processes at high speed with little effort lead to functional complaints
  • A high stress load increases the muscle tension especially in the shoulder and neck area
  • Constant sitting damages the intervertebral discs
  • As well as overwork, as well as underchallenge with missing decision authority lead to psychological stress
  • The constant view of the screen results in a high effort for the eyes
  • RSI (repetitive strain injury syndrome) means injury and pain in the cervical spine, shoulder, arm and hand area due to repetitive strain
  • Or known as CANS (complaints of Arms, Neck and Shoulder)
  • Tension headaches are mild to moderate pressing headaches caused by cramping of the neck and jaw muscles, often originating in the back of the head
  • Migraine (there are many different types of migraine) is a mostly hemiplegic pulsating headache associated with vegetative complaints (e.g. nausea, sensitivity to light, etc. ), caused by dilation of the blood vessels in the brain
  • Back pain up to the herniated disc in the lumbar or cervical spine
  • Sicca- Syndrome are dry eyes that burn, itch and water
  • Nervousness and irritability
  • Tiredness to exhaustion even with sufficient sleep
