Diagnosis of rubella infection is made on the basis of history and physical examination.
Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification in case of existing secondary diseases.
- Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – for suspected complicating liver diseases such as hepatitis (liver inflammation).
- X-rays of the affected joints – if arthritis (joint inflammation) is suspected.
- Computed tomography of the skull (cranial CT, cranial CT or cCT) – if meningoencephalitis (combined inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and meninges (meningitis)) or other secondary diseases of congenital (congenital) rubella infection is suspected.
- Magnetic resonance imaging of the skull (cranial MRI, cranial MRI or cMRI) – if congenital sequelae of rubella infection such as paresis (paralysis), hearing loss is suspected.
- X-ray of the chest (X-ray thorax / chest), in two planes – if pneumonia (pneumonia) is suspected.
- Echocardiography (echo; heart ultrasound) – in suspected valvular heart disease caused by congenital rubella infection.
