As a rule, all people can only benefit from a sports medical examination, but there are certain groups that benefit particularly. These are people for whom the fitness for sport can be restored by simple measures, or who can practice their sport without restrictions. This includes even simple examination methods for vision, the cardiovascular system or lung functionality.
The condition of skeletal muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments also plays an important role. A further group are people in whom a previously unknown disease could be detected by a sports medical examination. Circulatory disorders, high blood pressure, metabolic disorders or heart valve defects can be well treated if diagnosed early, and a subsequent training program can contribute to the patients’ well-being.
Types of sports medical examination methods
Sports medical examination methods include general medical examination methods such as the eye test, neurological examinations for orientation and thyroid gland examination, etc. as well as sports-specific examinations. In general, a general medical examination is performed first to assess the person’s general state of health and suitability for sports.
In addition, a stress test is also part of the program, which is intended to determine the person’s performance capability and thus also allows for an accurate sports assessment. From this assessment, a training plan can then be developed, which is individual and takes into account all possible obstacles and problems. In addition, a nutritional consultation can be applied, especially if there are nutritional problems.
This rough classification includes all individual sports medical and general medical examination methods that can be applied. The individual examinations can be divided into cardiovascular examinations, examination of the internal organs and examination of the sensory organs. In cardiovascular examinations, a resting ECG is usually first taken to examine the heart activity and the electrical transmission of stimuli through the heart muscle fibers. In addition, a 24-hour blood pressure measurement is initiated to ensure that the blood pressure profile over 24 hours does not show elevated or decreased values. During individual measurements, values can possibly be falsified and therefore, to be on the safe side, a 24-hour blood pressure measurement should be performed.
