Types of pregnancy gymnastics

Many pregnancy complaints can be effectively alleviated by the early start of targeted pregnancy exercises. The complaints can be counteracted in various ways. For this reason, expectant mothers should inform themselves about which type of pregnancy exercises are particularly useful at the current stage of pregnancy.

As a rule, the treating gynecologist (gynecologist) can help to find a suitable course near the place of residence. Especially during early pregnancy, the so-called pregnancy swimming (synonym: aqua gymnastics) is considered a particularly popular form of pregnancy gymnastics. The reason for this is above all the fact that the body of the expectant mother is effectively trained during the exercise sessions.

At the same time there is no significant overloading of the already strained joints. Furthermore, aqua gymnastics during early pregnancy is a particularly suitable form of pregnancy gymnastics because the entire musculature can relax in the water. By using various aids, the relaxation of individual muscle groups can be used to train other muscles effectively.

Since this form of pregnancy gymnastics only ever uses individual muscles or muscle groups, the body of the expectant mother is not excessively strained. This variant of pregnancy gymnastics can therefore help to effectively relieve existing pregnancy complaints after just a few training sessions. However, pregnancy swimming is not only used to alleviate early pregnancy complaints.

During the last trimester of pregnancy, regular training can also prepare the muscles for the forthcoming birth. This variant of pregnancy gymnastics can therefore help to effectively relieve existing pregnancy complaints after just a few training sessions. The term “traditional pregnancy gymnastics” refers to a moderate physical exercise that serves both to strengthen the muscles and to relax the expectant mother. Traditional pregnancy gymnastics usually includes various exercises from the field of traditional gymnastics and yoga. With the help of traditional pregnancy gymnastics, many of the typical pregnancy complaints can be effectively relieved.

Above all, targeted strengthening of the pelvic floor and back muscles can already be useful in the first trimester of pregnancy. By the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy at the latest, however, expectant mothers should begin to exercise at least lightly. Traditional pregnancy gymnastics includes a large number of different exercises and is therefore to the taste of almost every expectant mother.

When choosing the most suitable form of traditional pregnancy exercises, however, it is also important to consider the stage of pregnancy in which the expectant mother is in. While exercises in the prone and supine position can still be performed without problems during early pregnancy, the training should be changed at the beginning of the 16th week of pregnancy at the latest. From the 16th week of pregnancy onwards, exercises in the prone or supine position should also be avoided in the course of traditional pregnancy gymnastics.

In addition to the alleviating effect on most skeletal pregnancy complaints and the strengthening of the most important muscle groups, regular performance of traditional pregnancy exercises can also have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. For this reason, it is advisable for expectant mothers who suffer from severe circulatory problems and dizziness to begin traditional pregnancy exercises within the first trimester of pregnancy. In addition, various stretching exercises performed in the course of traditional pregnancy gymnastics can help strengthen the connective tissue. In general, it can be assumed that most forms of traditional pregnancy exercises can also be performed by high-risk pregnant women, for example women expecting triplets, without any problems until delivery. Nevertheless, the gynaecologist in charge of the patient should be consulted before starting an appropriate course.
