Home remedies
A bloated stomach is often a heavy burden for the person concerned and it is not uncommon to resort to home remedies before a visit to the doctor. Initially, suspected triggers such as fatty and bloated foods or carbonated drinks should be avoided. Gentle foods such as easily digestible white bread or soups can bring relief, as can commercially available gastrointestinal teas.
These contain a number of beneficial herbs which have a calming effect on the gastrointestinal tract. It is important not to overburden the stomach. Therefore, meals should be taken slowly and preferably in small quantities at a lukewarm temperature.
Warmth in the form of cherry pit pillows or hot water bottles can have a soothing effect. With all household remedies, however, it is advisable to consult a doctor if symptoms persist for a long time. If an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach is the cause of the bloated stomach, serious complications can also occur which cannot be controlled by conventional household remedies.
Bloated stomach during pregnancy
A bloated stomach is also not uncommon during pregnancy. The growth of the child and the uterus cause the internal organs to shift and partly displace, so that a feeling of fullness can occur even after small meals. The mother is additionally influenced by the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and thus suffers more easily from a bloated stomach.
Certain hormones cause the muscles of the internal organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract, to relax, which means that the digested food remains in the mother’s body for longer and promotes bloating. Pregnant women also often observe an increased sensitivity to certain foods, which then leads to an increased bloating of the stomach. In general, it is not dangerous for either the mother or the child.
In general, the pregnant woman should try to avoid particularly bloated foods. If severe pain occurs, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Independent intake of flatulent medication should also be discussed with a doctor.
