Associated symptoms | Stork bite on the forehead

Associated symptoms

Apart from the sharply defined red to dark red discoloration of the skin, no other accompanying symptoms occur in most cases. However, the intensity of the stork bite color changes in situations where the blood flow in the dilated vessels increases. A stork bite on a baby’s forehead turns a stronger red color when the baby is under heavy physical strain, screaming or even fever. It should be noted, however, that a stork bite on certain parts of the body can sometimes be accompanied by other malformations.

Does a stork bite your forehead itch?

A stork bite on the forehead usually does not lead to tormenting, unpleasant itching. A dilation of blood vessels cannot be a cause for itching. If, however, the skin surface in the area of the stork bite still itches severely, one should consider possible other causes.

An infection of the skin with bacteria, a so-called eczema (see: Eczema in babies), can also lead to a similarly circumscribed, sharply defined redness. Therefore, in this case or if other symptoms such as pain, weeping or signs of inflammation occur, a further medical examination should be carried out. Since a stork bite is a benign skin change that fades completely within the first 6 years of life, therapeutic measures are usually not necessary.

Nevertheless, it may happen that the spot does not fade or does not show a sufficient tendency to regress. In this case, therapeutic removal can be performed. In most cases this is considered due to a cosmetic blemish.A stork bite on the forehead, the nose or around the eyes is naturally more conspicuous than one in the neck area and can be a considerable blemish on the child’s beauty later on and lead to discomfort and aversion.

Remaining stork bites on the face can be desolated for example by using lasers or electronic needles. In the case of particularly extensive marks, removal is often difficult or does not show the desired or expected success. In these cases, a special make-up can help to cover the mark and make it disappear.
