Disability | Physiotherapy for wrist arthrosis

Disability

Whether or not incapacity to work is caused by wrist arthrosis depends on the symptoms and the doctor treating the patient. If the patient has few problems with his arthrosis, it will hardly be a reason to be put on sick leave. The situation is of course different with pain and, above all, restricted movement.

Due to the restricted mobility, the actual work may no longer be able to be performed. In addition, concentration suffers enormously due to the pain, which is why in this case it would be better to be unable to work before accidents occur. In most cases, the doctor is only consulted at a very late stage when pain has been present for a long time, so that accompanying symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, tennis elbow, etc.

have already occurred. In order to end the acute phase, the patient is put on sick leave for a certain period of time to eliminate the symptoms. If he starts working again and the symptoms quickly reoccur to the same extent, the incapacity to work is prolonged.

Through intensive medical and physiotherapeutic intervention, an attempt is made to reduce the complex of symptoms. If this is no longer successful, the patient will be declared unfit for work after a long process of expert opinions by doctors and discussions with health insurance companies. Usually a retraining is recommended to still participate in the professional life.

Bandage

In order to keep the wrist immobilized to prevent a worsening of the symptoms, the patient is given a wrist bandage. This bandage runs from the last third of the distal forearm to the middle of the hand and surrounds the thumb saddle joint with a loop. Mobility is possible but limited in the bandage so that the wrist is not subjected to too much stress.

In general, it would also be important to protect the wrist despite the splint, which is usually not possible due to the work. The bandage should be worn especially during work, because during this time there is a permanent strain on the wrist. If there is already pain in the wrist area, the bandage should be worn particularly intensively so that the overstrain reactions regress. The bandage serves as a support for the therapy, but will not reduce the symptoms, but only absorb the strain on the wrist a little. In the long term, a change in the work situation should be considered, as the arthrosis cannot be reversed and the symptoms tend to get worse.
