A pulled abdominal muscle usually heals completely within a period of one to two weeks. If appropriate treatment is initiated immediately after the first symptoms appear (first aid measures; PECH rule), the affected patients feel a significant relief of pain shortly after the traumatic event. Although the symptoms typical of an abdominal muscle strain can therefore subside quickly, the abdominal muscles should not be strained too early, even after the pain has subsided.

In general, it can be assumed that light activities during this period do not cause any further damage to the muscles. However, heavy muscular strain should be avoided at all costs. It should also be noted that after the occurrence of an abdominal muscle strain no sports activities can be carried out until full recovery.

If the abdominal muscles are strained too quickly and/or too much, a rupture of muscle or muscle fibre may occur under certain circumstances. The course of a muscle or muscle fibre rupture is much more complicated than a simple abdominal muscle strain. In addition, these injuries can significantly prolong the time to full recovery.

Pronounced injuries can also lead to the formation of scar tissue in the area of the abdominal muscles. Affected patients often suffer a permanent reduction in strength and performance due to the formation of scar tissue.
