Hallux-rigidus- shoes

Hallux rigidus is caused by a degenerative, arthritic change in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. This leads to limited extension, a swollen joint and pain during movement, especially when rolling. The degenerative alteration cannot be cured, the therapy of hallux rigidus is symptomatic. Initially, conservative measures such as special shoes or insoles can be used to reduce the pain. As a last resort, surgery is possible.

Shoe characteristics

Most of the shoes, which are based on current shoe fashion, as well as almost all shoes with high heels, have a very narrow cut and narrow the forefoot. This can promote and reinforce a hallux rigidus and lead to painful pressure points and malpositions. The most important characteristic of a shoe for a hallux rigidus is therefore that it offers enough space for the toes. The heel, on the other hand, should be sufficiently tight in the shoe to prevent the foot from slipping around and to ensure the necessary stability when walking.

What must be taken into account

A shoe in Hallux rigidus should have different characteristics:

  • The foot should be given enough space both in length and width to prevent the position of the joint partners and the pain from worsening.
  • An important criterion for the sole is that it is relatively firm and supports the rolling movement in order to avoid painful excessive stretching of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. The sole should therefore be slightly flexible but not completely stiff.
  • Adapted to the special anatomical conditions and the severity of the movement restriction, a roll-over aid or lowering of the big toe in the shoe can also make walking easier.
  • Apart from that, it is important that I can wear a shoe with Hallux rigidus insoles, because in many cases individually fitted insoles can further improve the wearing comfort and alleviate the pain when walking.
  • At best, the upper material of the shoe should be relatively soft and adapt slightly to the shape of the foot to increase comfort and convenience. There should also be no edges or seams on the inside that could cause pressure points. This is particularly important in the toe area to delay the progression of arthrosis in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe for as long as possible.
  • For a Hallux rigidus shoe, it is also important to have a wide opening in the shoe so that it is easy to put the shoe on and take it off, as well as enough space for the back of the foot so that no pressure points are created on the foot.
