Healing time | Physiotherapy for a fractured elbow

Healing time

The healing time of a fractured elbow depends on the therapy and care of the patient. After removal of the Redon-Drainage on the 2nd day the movement limit up to 60° flexion can be worked out assistively and actively. The wound healing is supported by elevation and decongestant therapy measures.

An X-ray control in the 4th and 8th week is necessary to monitor the progress of the wound healing. The ability to work is usually given after 10 weeks. The existing material must be removed after approx.

9 months. If the wound healing proceeds without problems, the elbow is able to bear weight again after 3 months. Depending on the extent of the injury, the healing time is of course delayed.

Rail

A splint fitting is usually difficult because the elbow is fixed in a bending position. An elbow orthosis is used to immobilize the elbow. To relieve the shoulder-arm complex there is usually a traction belt over the neck. In a conservative treatment, however, the elbow is generally immobilized in one orthosis only.

Operation duration

How long the operation of an elbow fracture takes depends on the extent of the injury. If a comminuted fracture is present, the operation takes longer because the bone fragments have to be brought together. The operation is mostly performed under general anesthesia. The doctor will be able to explain how long the operation will take.

How long do I have to stay in hospital?

The length of the hospital stay and the duration of the operation depends on the injury.

  • If the extent of the injury caused by a work or traffic accident is more extensive and does not only refer to the elbow, a hospital stay of several weeks can be assumed in order to cure all injuries.
  • In a “simple” elbow operation, redon-drainages are placed to collect the wound fluid, which are only removed the next day. Another day is usually waited to observe the wound healing. If good care is then available at home, a patient can be discharged. In most cases, however, patients stay in hospital for up to a week to observe the wound healing process.
