Laboratory parameters of the 1st order – obligatory laboratory tests.
- Small blood count
- Differential blood count
- Inflammatory parameter – CRP (C-reactive protein)
- Urine status (rapid test for: pH, leukocytes, nitrite, protein, glucose, ketone, urobilinogen, bilirubin, blood), sediment, if necessary urine culture (pathogen detection and resistogram, that is, testing suitable antibiotics for sensitivity / resistance).
- Electrolytes – calcium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphate [hypokalemia (potassium deficiency) may indicate functional ileus].
- Fasting glucose (fasting blood glucose), if necessary oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT).
- Blood gas analysis (BGA)
- Pancreatic parameters – amylase, elastase (in serum and stool), lipase.
- Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT), alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin.
- Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C or creatinine clearance, if applicable [evidence of renal failure due to fluid shifts, if applicable].
- Coagulation parameters – PTT, Quick [drop in Quick may indicate liver failure].
- Blood grouping, etc. (for surgery preparation)
- Pregnancy test (quantitative HCG)
Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and mandatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) or troponin I (hs-cTnI) – for suspected myocardial infarction (heart attack).
- NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide) – for suspected heart failure (cardiac insufficiency).
- Adrenal function diagnostics – ACTH, aldosterone, renin.
- Serological examination – if bacterial, viral or parasitic infections are suspected.
- Tumor markers – depending on the suspected diagnosis.
