Skin rash with wheals

Definition

A generalized rash characterized by wheals is also called urticaria. The wheal is the so-called skin florescence, which is characteristic of the rash. It is caused by a small, localized swelling (edema) in the skin.

It is typically very itchy and heals without scarring. One speaks of urticaria when a skin rash is caused by many hives. Urticaria can have various causes and can occur as an acute or chronic clinical picture. A distinction is made between urticarial eczema, which does not affect the entire body, but only localized areas of the body. Strictly speaking, however, these cannot be called a skin rash, since a rash affects most of the skin.

Treatment of skin rash with wheals

The treatment of a rash with wheals differs depending on the cause and type of rash. It is necessary to distinguish a symptomatic from a causal treatment. Since the causes can be very diverse, the measures to be taken are also very different.

An underlying infection with the often causative bacterium Helicobacter pylori is treated with antibiotics. Fungal infections are treated with fungicidal drugs (antimycotics). Triggering drugs should be discontinued or changed.

Possible food intolerances should also be determined by outlet tests. For symptomatic therapy there are drugs for external as well as internal use. In topical (external) therapy, cooling gels, zinc shaking mixtures or lotions with anti-pruritic additives such as polidocanol, glucocorticoids or menthol are used.

Light therapies are also used for the external treatment of urticaria. Internal therapy of a rash with wheals is carried out with antihistamines such as desloratadine, loratadine, cetericine and levocetericine. The use of glucocorticoids, ciclospoprin A and dapsone is also possible.

Home remedy against rash with wheals

Treatment with home remedies should be avoided in case of a rash with wheals. It is often very difficult to determine the cause of a rash. Additional treatment with home remedies applied to the skin or taken internally often makes it very difficult to determine the actual cause of the rash.

In the worst case, they further worsen the skin condition. They can lead to irritation of the sensitive skin or even to allergic reactions. We therefore advise against using the frequently recommended essential oils in particular.
