Summary

There are different causes that can cause pain in the joints, one of them is joint inflammation – arthritis. Arthritis can affect one or more joints at the same time, so one joint is called monarthritis and several joints are called polyarthritis. Furthermore, the joint inflammation can be based on a chronic process and is then called rheumatoid arthritis.

Another cause is an infection-related joint inflammation. In addition, the cause of the joint inflammation can be an accident or an injury to the knee, if germs were carried over into the knee joint in this way. This is known as post-traumatic inflammation.

A final cause is wear and tear, which leads to constant inflammatory irritation of the joint and can thus lead to joint inflammation. In addition, chronic diseases such as gout or other autoimmune diseases besides rheumatism can also lead to joint inflammation. The development of joint inflammation is due to a process in which inflammation-promoting mediators are released.

This is followed by increased blood flow to the tissue, resulting in the formation of edema, which explains the symptoms. The symptoms are the classic signs of inflammation, such as redness, swelling, overheating and pain with functional limitations in the joint. The joint may show a stiffness in addition to a stiffness. Other symptoms can be of a general nature, such as fatigue and fever.
