Application of Bepanthen® in pregnancy and lactation

Since the active ingredient dexpanthenol is a provitamin which only promotes the body’s own metabolic pathways but does not interfere with them in any way, as many other drugs do, most Bepanthen® products can also be used without hesitation during pregnancy and lactation. An exception is Bepanthen® antiseptic wound cream for which no data are available for use in pregnant or lactating women. The manufacturer advises not to use the cream extensively during these periods and also not in the breast area for nursing mothers. The latter also applies to the Bepanthen® solution. With Bepanthen® Sensiderm cream, any cream residue on the breast should be wiped off before breastfeeding.

Alternatives to Bepanthen®

There are many other skin care products, especially wound and healing ointments, with the ingredient dexpanthenol. From the companies Jenapharm, Heumann and Hexal, for example, creams with this active ingredient are available, all of them under the name “panthenol cream”. With 1.66€ per 100g, the preparation from Heumann is also many times cheaper than the branded product from Bepanthen®.

For the other products of the Bepanthen® range there is also usually a cheaper alternative under the active ingredient name “Panthenol”. One example is the Panthenol seawater nasal spray, which costs 2.89 per 20 ml, in contrast to the Bepanthen® seawater nasal spray, which costs 3.89 per 20 ml. If you want to save money when buying a product with the ingredient dexpanthenol, you can simply ask the pharmacy of your choice for the cheapest alternative.
