Treatment of swelling of the eye

If swelling occurs in one or both eyes, the first step is to find out what the exact cause is. Depending on this, the appropriate treatment should also be chosen. If swelling of the eye occurs due to the nightly lowering of blood pressure, no further measures need to be taken, as normalization of blood pressure is accompanied by a reduction in the swelling of the eyes.If the reason for the swelling is an allergic reaction, anti-allergic eye drops should be taken.

Vividrin® drops are very helpful and will quickly reduce the swelling of the eyelids. If the cause of the eye swelling is mainly an infection-related inflammation in the sense of conjunctivitis, antibiotic eye drops should be used for treatment. Gentamycin is mainly used here, which should be administered to the affected eye with one drop every 4 hours.

A barleycorn or a hailstone that causes swelling of the eye may not need to be treated, as improvement usually occurs on its own. Sometimes, however, the accompanying treatment with an antibiotic eye ointment or antibiotic eye drops may be necessary to avoid additional bacterial contamination. Eye swelling caused by kidney damage cannot be treated on its own, as the underlying disease must be treated.

So the sufficient work of the kidneys must be restored, which ensures that there is enough protein in the body. People with kidney disease are often given protein in parallel to compensate for the imbalance and ensure that fluid no longer leaks into the tissue. In addition to treating the underlying disease, some measures can also be taken to reduce the swelling of the eyes. Cold compresses or pads can have a decongestant effect on the eye. Compresses, which are first soaked in camomile-soaked liquid and then applied to the eye, can also lead to a rapid decongestant effect on the eye.

Duration of eye swelling

How long one or both eyes remain swollen depends entirely on the triggering cause. The very common blood pressure-related eye swelling, which occurs mainly after getting up, will disappear within a few minutes or an hour at most. A grain of barley or hail that causes eye swelling will take about 2-5 days to subside.

Allergic eye swelling can last up to 2 weeks or longer, depending on the season and the strength of the allergy. In this case, however, the treatment should be reconsidered, under which an anti-allergic swelling of the eye should be reached very quickly. If the cause of the swelling is kidney related, the underlying disease of the kidney must be treated first. Since the main cause of eye swelling in kidney disease is a protein deficiency, the symptoms can improve within a few days if the patient is consistently given protein. However, regular blood and protein monitoring is absolutely necessary.
