Duration | Bloated stomach after eating

Duration

How long an inflatable belly lasts is individually very different and depends on the cause. If a previous high fiber diet is the cause, the abdomen will calm down after 1-2 days with a healthy, light, low fiber diet. However, if the bloated belly is caused by irritable bowel syndrome, for example, the symptoms can last for weeks or months.

Diagnosis

It is often not necessary to see a doctor if you have an inflated abdomen. If the abdomen suddenly increases in size, sounds dull when you tap it and symptoms such as bloating and flatulence also occur, it is usually harmless. If you do go to the doctor, he will ask you some questions (eating habits, last bowel movement) and then carry out a physical examination.

During this examination the abdomen will be palpated, tapped and listened to in order to assess the intestinal sounds. An ultrasound examination of the abdomen may also be performed. An X-ray examination or a blood sample can also be considered. In the case of an inflated abdomen, these examinations usually do not reveal any significant abnormalities. They serve to exclude more serious causes.

Bloated abdomen during pregnancy

Due to the hormonal change, an inflated abdomen can occur, especially in the first weeks of pregnancy. To treat this, the same strategies are used as mentioned above. Avoidance of bloated food, carbonated drinks, a healthy diet and lots of exercise.

Bloated baby/infant stomach

A bloated abdomen with abdominal pain and flatulence is relatively common in infants, especially in the first four months. It is assumed that the not yet fully developed digestive system is responsible for this. The babies may indicate the symptoms by screaming or whining and pulling their legs up and then stretching them away again. When listening to the baby’s tummy, you may hear a “gurgling” sound. Besides a gentle stomach massage, teas such as fennel or caraway tea can help.If the complaints occur for the first time and several times, the pediatrician should be consulted if necessary, in order to exclude that it concerns a more serious illness.
