Procedure
The standard surgical procedure is varicose vein stripping. Here the affected vein is pulled out. In detail, the end of the vein close to the trunk is first searched for via a small incision, prepared and cut through at the point where it joins the deep leg vein.
A probe is then inserted into the vein and advanced to the planned extraction point. Now even larger lateral branches are cut through. Finally, the lower part of the vein is exposed via a small incision so that the probe now protrudes from the vein at the bottom of the leg. With the help of the probe, the entire vein is pulled out of the lower incision point. Before this, small side branches can be pulled out through very small incisions.
Aftercare
Immediately after the operation, the leg is tied tightly. Elastic compression treatment, i.e. wearing a compression stocking, should be continued for at least three to four weeks. The compression is intended to reduce postoperative bleeding, swelling and bruising.
This is done with bandages on the one hand and compression stockings on the other. Physical exercise is also important. Although sport should be avoided at first, regular walking also helps to prevent swelling and bruising.
It also stimulates the blood circulation. However, the leg should be given sufficient time to recover immediately after the operation. The leg can be elevated to relieve pressure, which facilitates venous return.
Prolonged walking and standing should be avoided. The stitches are removed after about two weeks. Since the actual cause was not treated by the operation, further veins may be affected by varicosis (varicose veins) in later life.
Therefore, after sufficient recovery from the surgery, preventive measures should be taken. These include sports activities, especially endurance sports such as jogging or swimming.Compression stockings are also helpful, which are especially recommended for long periods of sitting or standing. Furthermore, well-fitting footwear should be ensured.
How long does the surgery take?
The duration of the operation depends on the extent of the varicose vein condition. Usually, the actual surgery is completed within an hour. Of course, time for the induction of anaesthesia and preparations for the operation must be taken into account.
Often patients can be discharged home accompanied by an escort within two to three hours after the operation. Various anaesthetic procedures can be used for varicose vein stripping. The anaesthetic procedure should be discussed individually with the doctor.
General, local and spinal anesthesia are available. With general anesthesia, the patient receives a sleeping pill, a painkiller and a drug to relax the muscles. It is the standard procedure for these operations.
In local anesthesia, the anesthetic is injected locally into the nerves supplying the surgical area, thus preventing the perception of pain. In spinal anesthesia, an anesthetic is injected close to the spinal cord. This disturbs the perception of pain but at the same time limits the motor function of the legs. This returns a few hours after the operation. The patient is conscious during both spinal and local anesthesia.
